Why Photography?

When I was in the fifth grade, I begged my parents for a camera. That summer I was filling that poor SD card with photos of bugs, sunsets, neighbors and anything else I could capture in my shutter. None were Pulitzer worthy, but they were special to me. On my recent trip to South Dekota, I rediscovered my love for landscape photography. And that childlike happiness came rushing back. Standing in the humid Badlands, I felt just like ten-year-old me when she captured her first butterfly. Happy, creative, and a little bit egotistical.

  1. It's truly wonderful how rediscovering a passion can bring us right back to those moments of pure joy and creativity we experienced as children. Your journey from capturing everything in sight with your first camera to finding that spark again in the landscapes of South Dakota is inspiring. It’s a beautiful reminder of how our interests and passions, no matter how small they start, can be a source of happiness and self-expression throughout our lives. Keep chasing that feeling and capturing the world through your lens. The beauty you see and the memories you create are priceless.

  2. I love it when someone rediscovers something they once loved. That photo is super pretty. Makes me excited to take a photography course this spring semester at IUSB. I cannot wait to see what more beautiful photos we have in store. As well as any tips that you might have for setting up that "perfect shot".

  3. As a photographer myself, it's heartwarming to someone rekindle that love for photography through childhood nostalgia. I'm sure that ten-year-old Paige would stare at this image in awe if she knew you took it. Personally, I remember having cheap, little toy-like cameras growing up, not knowing that it would one day serve as a hobby I adore. It makes we wonder what other hobbies we may connect with again through nostalgia--or maybe we may connect to a hobby by visiting a location from our childhood. Do you have a favorite location to take landscape photos at?

  4. I love that image from the Bedlands. I have something about skys and their magic. I am glad you got that feeling back to capture more images. I think it is amazing to shoot for passion than for money. The concepts are deeper and creates a beautiful storyline.
